About PJW from The U.K.: Fan since '90.

And thanks (47,267) by PJW from The U.K.
Eric, thanks for all the years you've done this. It's been great and I've a lot of respect for the work and dedication you put into this opportunity for all of us. Thanks a lot. I don't remember the names of all the really decent people past and present, but Edward, Your posts are always, always spot on. thanks for the good reads and same goes to all like minded folk. The rest of you, peace. take care. Life is sweet, you know, it's not worth getting angry or aggressive about others, especially not the ones you don't agree with it. It'll save you crazy amounts of stress.

Bill, concert dvds (47,154) by PJW from The U.K.
Yeah, I know they're all dubbed, but that doesn't make it any more acceptable.

Shelly (47,129) by PJW from The U.K.
I grasp the concept of a tour DVD, it's pretty self explicable. What I question is the point of a DVD dubbed where she's not happy with certain bits? What does anyone gain from this aside from a false perception of the show, her voice, the true emotion of each moment etc. It removes the necessity of it being this particular tour, unless its an aesthetic thing and one gained some kind of gratification at seeing an up-to-date Mariah on stage miming as opposed to Mariah from X year singing the same song.

What would be the point of that?

Japan concert (47,089) by PJW from The U.K.
I've watched a few short videos on YouTube and Instagram. I don't know what to say really. My All, Vision Of Love and Emotions were, from what I could see, atrocious. Beautiful sounded good, though pre-recorded. I'm really sad right now and, again, pray that Mariah sorts her voice out.

More on "Do you know this song?" (46,578) by PJW from The U.K.
What I meant to write in the last post (but forgot) was that I view Mariah's "do you know this song" thing in the same vein as the onstage diva antics. Or one time it really didn't connect for me was when she performed "Just be good to me" and she does that. "C'mon, everybody get up - get up - and you. Get up." Really, it's all banter to keep the crowd hyped but she never was good at faking it and like the first poster said, she is so lovely when relaxed that it doesn't matter (to me) if she doesn't banter much, her music is enough.

"Do you know this song?" (46,576) by PJW from The U.K.
I get what LC is saying. It annoys me too. I can undertand why Mariah would say it when ad-libbing a snippet of "Llove takes time" as it's an old song that some newer fans aren't necessarily aware of or familiar with, especially not live and in that format. Though someone correctly pointed out that most artists do this, Mariah has a habit of doing it to cover her discomfort and the awkwardness she feels on stage and employs the same line more often than not at the beginning of ABMB. To my ears, it doesn't sound cute. In her defence, she's not alone. so many artists have stage fright. And having watched a ridiculous amount of her live performances, I'm overly familiar and bored with the same tactic, something I'm sure non fanatics don't really notice. Again, I think it's a camera thing. In intimate performances where she doesn't need to be the star, she's very sweet, confident, talks humbly with the crowd (she once chatted to us about eastenders, a UK soap) but when there's cameras or a mass crowd, she feels the need to keep up that "star charisma" and fill space, something that at times, I feel, comes across as awkward.

Rockyroc (46,574) by PJW from The U.K.
I just wanted to reach out. I don't know what it is you're going through but know this; myself and many others here love you and I'm sure that likewise you're very loved in the real world. Don't ever feel ashamed about anything or let others definitions of situations define how you should feel about yourself. All problems we're given, internal or external, are opportunities to open our minds, see life from a different perspective and grow. That's so, so valuable. Yeah, they're always hard but the reward is love, maturity and strength. Many never get those lessons. I'm glad you have friends to talk to and I hope they're supporting you right now. But please, don't worry about anything. It will be okay. I'm society's textbook definition of f**k up; I'm gay, been a victims of abuse, have HIV, have had mental health problems, substance abuse, homelessness and to add to it all am a liberal thinker who doesn't believe in the system. I've been judged, to put it lightly. But from it all I've learnt to love myself, follow my heart and it's made me beyond happy. It's given me real peace and truth. It's yours to have as well. I promise oh, and Mariah was there for it all as she is for you. Love to you Rocky. I don't know where in England you are, but I'm in London. If you need an understanding person to talk to/email/text then just let me know. Anytime. (Plays "anytime you need a friend".)

Tidbit (46,339) by PJW from The U.K.
Did you know that Mariah's name is actually Maria? Ma-rye-ah is the true English pronounciation of Maria. As the world became more connected the Latin pronounciation has been commonly adopted. One could argue that Mariah is a name in its own right, however we know that Patricia named her after the musical "They call the wind Maria", itself spelt correctly but pronounced with Rye-ah. [Webmaster: Actually, the musical is called "Paint your wagon", and in it is a song called "They call the wind Maria".]

Mariah's tattoo (46,292) by PJW from The U.K.
She has "Mrs.cannon" as the body of the butterfly on her lower spine, though she was obviously clever enough to get it done like that so it can be covered over.

Recorded the album with a sinus infection? (45,930) by PJW from The U.K.
Really? This is a variant of "I can't hear myself in my monitor/my dress is broken/it's early in the morning". I don't buy it. Further, she claims she recorded some of the songs in the space of a few minutes and kept those vocals. At the time she also claimed that WBT was sung straight through in one take and that was the version we got, which I never believed as she's not yet come close to it live.

Bye bye (45,875) by PJW from The U.K.
I just listened to Bye Bye for the first time in a couple of years and I find there's something really special about that track. I'm actually not a fan of its production (nor the majority of E=MC2 production) but the melody, her voice, the sentiment, the ad libs (oh, those ad libs). It just gets me. I still get lost in it and if I'm honest, I think that was the last time I really got lost in a Mariah track, and by lost I mean flamingly gay lost, fingers fluttering, heart leaping and all the jazz that comes with it. Admittedly my personal life changed beyond expectation or comprehension after that single was released and I lost my last bit of youthful freedom to indulge in music like I did, but I also feel this was the last time we saw Mariah as she was. By that single her life would also change beyond comprehension and that's since reflected in her art. It may not be her greatest track but for me, artistically, and despite her age, it was the last glimpse I got of that "innocent" playful sweet voiced girl. She was a woman after that and I'd grown into a man. The track title is so apt.

Pondering (45,872) by PJW from The U.K.
Upon the idea of abandoning the concept of albums. The industry as we've known it doesn't work anymore and really, artists aren't limited by the boundaries the labels create and call standard. It's all nonsense and something Mariah is no longer a part of. If I were in her position, I'd release tracks as and when I saw fit. They could stand alone or as part of a continuing story of where the artist is. I think it would allow more artistic freedom, remove a lot of pressure and allow the chance for more success. You only have to look at the sales of "Beautiful" compared to MIAM to see the benefits of individual tracks. Same with Obsessed or TMB. She ultimately lost the chance to sell great individual tracks or tell individual stories because the rules say everything has to come at once. Personally, I reckon that had there of been no MIAM and she'd have released some of these album tracks one by one without the constant expectation of an album, she'd have shifted far more in 2013-14 than she has done.

Orkun (45,798) by PJW from The U.K.
I stand by his opinion. It wasn't a good performance. And yes, that is exactly what Katy Perry means with the Mariah Carey karaoke lyrics, I just didn't want to be that specific in my Katy Perry post as sometimes posting on here is too tiring due to the abuse you get in return and if you couldn't figure the dig out then I felt it was better leaving people in ignorance. I can see how people can perceive Orkun as having a negative attitude but I see him as a realist who was and is passionate about the fantastic artist Mariah Carey was. That she is no longer that person/artist doesn't invalidate his experience or opinion as a fan. Besides that, I don't think it's fair to judge someone on their past comments and use that as ammunition now. More than one of you are guilty of offending another (whether offence should ever be taken or not is a different matter) and in this instance, his comment was correct.

The World Music Awards (45,771) by PJW from The U.K.
Have just started on U.K. T.V. and as we know, Mariah opened the ceremony with Meteorite. With the occasional moment of singing over the track it was a mimed performance of the album version. The track was turned off at the end so she could sing the last note and a whistle note which was pretty raspy. She barely moved, with the exception of the usual dancer helping her down the step to the front of the stage where she put the mic back into its stand. Underwhelming all round. She did look lovely though and her size didn't matter, the dress looked nice and she was, as ever, more decorated than a Christmas tree. Her awards were presented by J.D. who struggled to find words and, to be honest, looked like he'd rather be elsewhere. Again, she looked gorgeous in the mesh dress, irrelivent of her size, and sung a tiny bit of "Dedicated". I'm sure you'll all see this online soon anyway.

Covers / Katy Perry (45,741) by PJW from The U.K.
Sweetheart is my favourite cover, hands down. As a kid I always loved the Rainy Davis version but her vocals were never quite as good as that beat so it was like all my Christmas' had come at once when Mariah re-did it. It's R'n'B perfection. The Beautiful Ones took me a long time to come around to as I'm a Purple Rain fanatic, especially that song live, and Sisqo really winds me up sometimes but now I hear it completely differently. It's gorgeous. I don't understand the hate IWKWLI gets sometimes? I adore it, especially coming off the end of that fantastic sequence starting with The Impossible. It may not be long enough but I don't see that as a reason to dislike a song. Her vocals are beautifully restrained and the whole thing sounds quite delicate to me, fragile in the prettiest of ways. R.e. Katy Perry, I get why there could be a dig buried in there but really, it's Katy Perry. Who's fussed? As for the drag queen thing, you all know that Mariah calls herself a drag queen, right?

Glitter / Mariah's videos (45,268) by PJW from The U.K.
From what I remember the Glitter soundtrack didn't actually get bad reviews. There were a couple that said it was a bit of a mish-mash of styles but aside from that Mariah was praised on her vocals, the ballads and the retro aspect of it. I agree though, it was well ahead of its time. There was criticism around the Loverboy video and the film but these were all rebound criticisms from that whole period, at least where the video is concerned. Talking of videos, that's a hard one to choose as I like different aspects of various videos. Brett Ratner productions are always great and I can't really choose from them though if pushed, Heartbreaker has the best of everything, video, song, vocal and Mariah-wise. I think she looks the best in I Still Believe. I've never got over how beautiful she is in that. My least favourite has to be You're Mine (Eternal) or I Stay In Love.

Mariah's heritage / the truth, Shelly, Nicki (45,243) by PJW from The U.K.
I don't think Shelly et al. are making a big deal of it, I think (with all due respect) the way you're writing could come across as offensive, more so because it's blatantly incorrect and people perceive negative statements without basis as hating. Your first post on the topic used a random story about a young, perhaps confused, child who doesn't fit into a racially hostile world as basis for an insinuation that she's always lied about her race. You went on to say she's been "anything but candid" about it and that the record company were doing "damage control" when they found out. As far as I'm aware she's never shut up about it. She's got songs about it. It's one of those topics I roll my eyes about when I hear it brought up again 24 years later. You then backed up your point with the defence that "before signing at Sony" she passed as white and then when she got her contract they had to change things up. So now they're doing damage control about someone who's not famous because of their perception of her race? Not only is this all hypothetical, but even if it's true it's contradictory within itself and with the actual evidence we have and thus comes across as across as negativity for the sake of it. I get you may have just come across it online but there's a million things. That doesn't validate them. And unfortunately when it comes to race (especially with the implications you're raising, consciously or not) the topic becomes that bit more delicate.

Rainbow (44,807) by PJW from The U.K.
After the conversations about "Did I do that" I took another listen. I'm still not crazy about it but hear it very differently than what I did and definitely wouldn't skip it anymore. I've always enjoyed the melody of her verses, but found there was something dark about the song, but I never got Into Mystikal as an artist. This whole album is fantastic, to be honest. My least favourite track used to be "After tonight" as I couldn't sit with the production and was still hung up on "My all" being her Latin track but now it's almost a completely different song to me. She sounds beautiful and sings so sensually, you can almost see what she's feeling for luis. And the production is very much of the song, if you know what I mean? I think "Rainbow" is about to get a new life in my house.

A sore topic, but (44,804) by PJW from The U.K.
So this will rile a few people but as a disclaimer, I mean no disrespect or offence to anyone. My (quite serious) question is: what is Mariah going to do about her voice? Will she undertake surgery for her nodules? I've thought about it a lot recently and today had my live performances playlist on random. It went from Reflections (at home for the holidays 01) to My All (Pavarotti and friends), AYNAF (procters) to I'm That Chick (hills finale). I don't need to say that the difference between them all is considerable, especially between AYNAF and IMC. I also read these very interesting forum opinions yesterday. I love MIAM but feel that vocally, she's at a point where something has to give or some decisions have to be made. Does she carry on and risk degrading her voice more (something she's obviously very careful with as we can see with the lipping) does she change her lifestyle dramatically or does she have nodule surgery and all associated with it? What would you guys prefer? And please, let's all discuss this nicely with mature respect for each other.

Re selling out/using her music to brand (44,719) by PJW from The U.K.
In response to recent comments stating she isn't using this drink as promo for her music and that she's never allowed her music to be used in commercials etc, both are untrue. Butterfly drink comes with content linking you to album promo and the "You're mine (eternal)" video and I read that an advertising campaign will follow using "Thirsty". With regards to selling her songs for commercials, she's done so internationally throughout her career and publishing allows her music to be used on any random programme. Only the other day I heard "Hero" being used on quite a crass tv show. Advertising wise, have the Intel commercials been forgotten so quickly where she sat in the library singing "Mine again". Or "Love story" for MTV? Similarly, although she wrote new material for it, she had the Pepsi deal with "Time of your life" and other ringtones and also "Misty moon" for that Japanese tea company in '02 or '03. Don't believe Mariah doesn't use her music for financial gain outside of record sales, she's done her fair share.

Samples (44,701) by PJW from The U.K.
Clueey, this is regarding one of your posts again. Lol. You spoke about Mariah using Eddie Kendrick's sample and it reminded me that one of the things I've really appreciated about Mariah's music over the years is her use of incredible samples and the music it's opened me up to that I might never have heard, aswell as always marvelling at how well (I think) they've been used. A lot of non fans don't agree but I've always appreciated and seen the beauty in both.

Talking of Mariah's sexiness (44,697) by PJW from The U.K.

Betcha gon know / Cluey (44,690) by PJW from The U.K.
In response to your post about BGK: I agree on both your points. R. Kelly is a fantastic musician, lyricists and has a beautiful voice. Mariah is an RnB artist through and through and that's exactly the way I like her. My fav tracks are her RnB ones, whatever vocal spectacular she may pull on others. But him on this, I don't get it. As someone else said, his verses doesn't make sense to what she's talking about. There's no response as in on "How much" with Usher, instead his statement about a completely unrelated event. Then there's the poor copy and paste esque insertion of his vocals and the odd fact that she didn't remove the intro to the song referencing her last album or the "to be continued". Why not? In the same vein and referencing an old post of mine, I was disappointed to see they kept the drink pouring in "It's a wrap". Perhaps in that and "Thirsty" they're pouring Butterfly.

Response to Cluey (44,689) by PJW from The U.K.
For me, how Mariah behaves is taken so seriously because she takes herself so seriously and tries so hard. Nothing is natural, from the poses in photos to her directing a video of her walking across the street. Her music videos are 3 minutes of her trying to be as sexy as possible without realising that real sexiness isn't constructed, it just is. And, as I've said before, that all comes from deep insecurity and the need to be validated. What's sad about it is that in real life she's unbelievably beautiful and when just talking to you, she's natural, sweet, friendly and down to earth (at least on quite a few occasions that I've met her, the last one being in 06). But as soon as a camera is in her face her ego kicks in and she goes into pose mode all the while claiming she's "just being casual". Even if it's a joke - which it's not - it's not funny. There's no punch line. She has a concept of who she is publicly in her head and can't seem to break it down, more than likely because of people around her who are also on her payroll (Rachel, the BVlists, J.D. etc.) who seemingly go along with this joke/act. even her husband was a love blind fan beforehand, he made no point of hiding it. And so, to answer your question, it's taken seriously because she'll dress something up as "just walking across the street" when it's clear that's not what's happening, as opposed to Miley or Gaga making blatant publicity stunts and not hiding the fact that they are. It looks stupid.
