Mimi drops out of the top ten

But before we get to the news behind the headline, let's discuss "Shake It Off". This week was probably the last opportunity "Shake It Off" had at achieving pole position on the Hot 100. The release of the remix does help the single regain its bullet but alas it remains lodged at #2 behind "Gold Digger". With Mariah relinquishing the #1 spot on Hot 100 Airplay to Kanye this week it would seem virtually impossible for her to challenge him for the #1 spot on the Hot 100 in the coming weeks.

And so "Shake It Off" enters its fifth week at #2 which is more than any of Mariah's previous #2 hits had managed to do. On the Pop 100 the story remains the same as Mariah is unable to claim the #1 spot. On the corresponding airplay chart Kanye surges 15-2. A #1 on the Pop 100 seems out of reach as well. But this week "Shake" is starting to make noise on the dance charts as it debuts at #48 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart at #21 on the Dance Radio Airplay chart.

Meanwhile "We Belong Together" further solidifies its title of 2005's biggest hit as it enters its 22nd week in the top ten. And as long as this song has been out it is still reaching new heights at Adult Contemporary where it has now reached #5 albeit unbulleted.

And so this is the week that "The Emancipation Of Mimi" finally falls out of the top ten of the Billboard 200 for the first time since its release. What that means is that "Mimi" spent 23 straight weeks in the top ten. That is more than 50 Cent's "The Massacre", Eminem's "Encore", and Green Day's "American Idiot". As you've guessed by now the last album to score 23 straight weeks in the top ten was Usher's "Confessions". In fact just like with "Mimi", "Confessions" fell out of the top ten with a 9-11 dip in its 24th week.

A big reason Mariah falls out of the top ten is due to a slew of new releases occupying spots in the top ten. Those new releases are led by Disturbed's "Ten Thousand Fists" which debuts at #1 ahead of Bon Jovi's latest at #2. One shouldn't rule out a return to the top ten for "The Emancipation Of Mimi".
