Mariah Carey descending on Times Square

To celebrate the release of her new album, "The Emancipation of Mimi", Mariah Carey is planning a party that will take over the "crossroads of the world", New York's Times Square. The site of one of the biggest annual New Year's Eve celebrations will also host an April 12 performance by the recording artist to be broadcast live on ABC's "Good Morning America".

To facilitate the performance, which kicks off the morning show's outdoor concert season, 44th Street will be closed between 6th Avenue and Broadway. The "GMA" appearance coincides with the release of "The Emancipation of Mimi" on Island Def Jam. The artist is expected to perform five songs, including the singles "We Belong Together" and "It's Like That". Three of the songs will be aired live, with the other two slated for later in the week on "Good Morning America".

Written by Carey and co-produced by Jermaine Dupri, the anthemic power ballad "We Belong Together" debuted last week at No. 76 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. "It's Like That", another Carey/Dupri collaboration, peaked at No. 17 on that tally and No. 16 on the Hot 100.

Although the new album is being heralded as "the return of the voice", Carey recently told Billboard "the voice has been here all along... But truth be told, I feel that my voice is in a better place than it has been in years."
