Mariah sits down with Barbara Walters

Connie Chung snagged tonight's big Gary Condit interview, but Barbara Walters has one heck of a consolation prize: Mariah Carey. The embattled singer, who suffered an emotional breakdown on July 25 and spent the next 11 days in Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Conn., agreed to sit down with Walters for a "20/20" piece that ABC will air Sept. 12.

I'm told Walters beat out the competition because she interviewed Carey for a "20/20" story a few years ago, and she and the singer had a good rapport. Carey's rep would not say when or where the chat would take place but did confirm the interview. Carey consented to the interview, her rep added, "to clear up a lot of nonsense and rumors that have been in the print press. Mariah wants to resume her normal life."

The singer left a new audio message on her Web site yesterday thanking her fans and assuring them, "You definitely can't believe everything you read. I am taking care of myself, and as I speak to you, I'm looking at the most beautiful rainbow that's going across the entire sky."
