Mariah Carey's label Def Jam denies surprise release

A statement from Mariah Carey's record label has quashed rumours that the star will be releasing her album via a surprise launch. Last week, Carey suggested that she might be putting out her next album through a Beyoncé-style all-at-once release.

"I have to be the one that announces this, especially the title," Carey said, hinting that the record would be named after a "a personal possession of mine that's part of an entity that I've had almost all my life." Carey did not explicitly said her upcoming album would be a surprise release, but interviews involving people familiar with the album's planned distribution confirmed a digital-first, all-at-once plan was in operation, according to Billboard.

However, Def Jam is now claiming the album will follow a traditional strategy and lead up to a "late May" digital/physical release. Def Jam's exec VP of media said: "Mariah will announce the date and title in advance of the on-sale date."
